Day 365 – Friday, May 12, 2017
The Journey
Shaking off her dripping hands, Dew surveyed far to near,
Appraising work she done this day, and had from year to year
Decorating fields of green, so loved and so adored,
She put her hands upon her hips, and sighed, –I am so bored
Movement now, plowing through her work as if on queue,
Up popped fuzzy snout and head, her best friend, little Shrew
You’re late, she said. I’ve finished now, no droplets left to place,
Apologizing sheepishly, he laughed and said, let’s race!
So race they did, down to the shore, where rocks are best to skip,
And as she gazed out on the sea, she said, I need a trip
It’s time to ask some questions; it’s time to have some fun,
It’s time to get some sunshine on this body overrun
I’ve had to move to higher ground as earth was saturated,
I grumbled as I packed my bags, a lot more than frustrated
I have some friends in southern Cal, with them I hope to stay,
I want to meet Methuselah, and see what he will say
Cherished in White Mountains there, for near five thousand years,
What he’s witnessed, life and death, must bring an eye to tears
He grew into a Bristlecone when flesh and bone were through,
And rules the plants and animals, and all who visit too
WOW, said Shrew, can I go too? I’d like to meet him there,
You shouldn’t go alone you know, you’ll need someone to care
All right, she said, go pack your bag, we’ll leave by morning light,
We’ll ask the birds to watch our way, and relay we’re all right
She shivered in anticipation, excitement mixed with fear,
And knew she’d miss her furry friends who loved her something dear
They knew there’d be some trials, and some difficult travails,
But that’s the stuff of memories and telling tall of tales
She woke up with the prospects of adventure in her head,
And couldn’t wait for setting out, to see where trails led
The woods they were a twitter, with news of this big day,
Creatures gathered great and small to wave them on their way
Backpack on, laces tight, she found a walking stick,
Nuts and berries in her pouch for lunch should do the trick
Shrew showed up with beaming smile, so wide it hurt his face,
And gave sweet Dew a thumbs up cue, no other could replace
She stood and faced the crowd collected, Shrew right by her side,
And from the North, wise owl flew, to bless them with a guide
Don’t worry friends, we won’t be gone forever, just a bit,
Just need to shake some cobwebs off and gain some ancient wit
Wish us well and see us in your hearts arriving home,
And join us any time you can, and have an urge to roam
You will see, you’ll hear from me, about our dusty trail,
With stories of a woodland sprite and friend with fuzzy tail
With that, they scampered down the path, a waving as they went,
And knew this was a journey full of fun and heaven sent
They skipped along and sang a song, of rambling and lore,
And disappeared into the sun, in search of something more
